A Doula is not meant to take the place of a birth partner. We are only here to support your decisions, whatever they may be, and to provide information on concerns and questions you may have during your pregnancy. We are experienced in birth pain management and can do massage and aromatherapy during labor to help ease pain. We also have access to a lot of information to help allay issues or concerns that you have during your pregnancy. Your partner is the most important person to you during your pregnancy and labor. Our role as Doula should complement your partner's role in your pregnancy.
Often, we have found that having a doula present during the birth helps partners feel more comfortable to perform the role they want. I have supported births where the partner was very hands on and all I did was run errands like getting ice, timing contractions, and getting cool cloths. I have also supported births where the partner was quite happy to sit back and let me do the back rubs and help the mom make decisions. It is my job to be whatever you need me to be during your birth.
